March 13, 2023 Bloom Update 🌸
The last few Bountiful weekly almond updates have all been about the weather. Why is that? Well as those of us in California can attest, the weather has been cold, windy, and wet during a time when it's "normally not like this". All this to be said, I'll be leading this week's almond bloom update with...drum roll, please... Weather!
The atmospheric river event over California, funnily named Pineapple Express, hit California last week bringing 1-2 inches of precipitation to North, Central, and South almond growing regions. Below you'll see a summary of California Precipitation over the last week.
The rain also produced some hail events, over the weekend, as reported by folks on social media in the Central and South almond-growing regions. See here and here.
Following the rain, warmer temperatures highs ranging from 71-69 degrees Fahrenheit. Below you'll see the average Temperature over last week for almond-growing regions in California. You can view the weather for your area of interest on the Bountiful platform.
2023 cumulative bee flight hours are 92-129 hours less this year when compared to 2022* bee flight hours, and cumulative chill portions for 2023 continue to be up over 2022*, by 17-23 chill portions.
*Please note Bountiful only measures bee flight during bloom. The 2022 bee flight hours below are as of March 9, 2022.
🌸 Following the completion of 2023 almond bloom observations you can expect a final bloom analysis from me summarizing the outcomes of this year's bloom with a comparison going back to 2011. If you have any feedback for me on things you'd like to make sure I cover, let me know!
Wishing you a Bountiful Bloom!
