⛈️ Rain, rain, and more rain

I'm sure we've all heard the old adage "history repeats itself". Well, I guess the weather, more specifically precipitation + snow are no different.

It was around this same time last year we talked about this same topic... The rain came, but how much + snowpack update? I remember the feeling well... We were ready to start high-fiving and cheering the sweet possible relief of drought.

The chart above is a screenshot I took today from Bountiful Weather, Precipitation section on the platform. It shows a summary (December 5th-January 5th) of Precipitation for California: 2023, 2022, and 2021.

I benchmarked the present year to the last two years to see how similar or different the Total and Max/Min precipitation received are.

Total precipitation for the last month to date (2023) is:

  • better than 2022, up +5.51%, and
  • blows 2021 out of the water (pun intended), up +471.15%.

You can build and track your precipitation chart on the Bountiful platform. Be sure to select your desired area of interest (i.e. California state, Fresno county, Colusa county, etc.)

Reminder: why and how precipitation matters
The amount of rain received over the course of the last 30 days slows down processing speed. We should expect to see precipitation impact ABC Form 1 crop receipts reported on the Position Report for the month of December and possibly into January.

While rain is helpful in flushing root systems and laying trees to rest, what will determine if the drought is over? The snowpack + spring warming temperatures.
