👀 A port fire brings port closure

Using weekly export data to uncover impacts on almonds

Following the news of the earthquake that devastated lives and communities in Turkey and Syria early this week, was news of a port fire that broke out in Iskenderun.

The fire resulted in the operational closure of Iskenderun port. Forcing major shipping lines, such as Maersk and CMA CMG, to find alternative options for containers on the water and possible recovery of containers delivered to Iskenderun port.

All this news made me wonder how many California almonds if any, were possibly sitting or on their way to Iskenderun.

Insert Weekly Export data to help uncover the number of containers going into Turkey + the ports those containers are headed to.

In the last 90 days California almonds, both inshell and shelled, have gone into 3 main Turkish ports: Mersin, Izmit, and Evyap. Avoiding Iskenderun all together.

The total number of TEUs shipped, from November to January, for each respective port in Turkey are as follows:

  • Mersin: 246.75 TEUs
  • Izmit: 37 TEUs
  • Evyap: 21.67 TEUs

Based on the data, from what we can see, there should be no direct impacts to California almond container imports into Turkey.

If you have different news or have been impacted, email me I'd love to talk with you.
